Marin & Napoleon Rail Bridge Improvements

Marin & Napoleon Rail Bridge Map

Background and Summary
The Marin Street and Napoleon Street bridges are located near the base of Islais Creek, under the I-280 freeway, in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood. The Napoleon St. Bridge will need to be fully replaced for safety and structural integrity purposes, whereas minor safety improvements will be made to the Marin St. Bridge. Additional track work may occur from Cesar Chavez to Jerrold Street.

Project Scope:
  • Napoleon Street Bridge - Improve safety and security, minimize future maintenance repairs, and replace deficient bridge components by replacing the 4 short bridge spans with a center steel bridge. The new bridge will feature steel girders and new wing walls.
  • Marin Street Bridge - Improve safety and security, maintain the bridge at a state of good repair, and improve worker safety.
  • Potential additional track work to replace the rail from Cesar Chavez to Jerrold

Work on the bridges began in December 2020 and is expected to last up to 14 months.

The Napoleon Street rail bridge will be replaced during the weekends of April 17 and April 24. This will require street and parking closures along Napoleon Street.

Community Impacts During Construction
While a majority of the work will be completed during the day, in order to maintain rail operations, night and weekend work will be required for some construction activities. Local businesses and neighbors will be notified before the start of any work.

Access to businesses along Marin and Napoleon Streets will remain open during a majority of the construction. Pedestrian and vehicular traffic will not be impacted for the majority of this work.

The project will require two weekend service closures beginning Saturday, April 17. The construction is scheduled to take place the following weekends:

  • Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 19
  • Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25

Free bus service will replace train service between Bayshore and San Francisco stations during all San Francisco service closures. Buses are ADA accessible and will have limited capacity for luggage and bikes onboard. We thank you for your continued patience. For more information visit
