Background and Summary
Caltrain operates on two tracks, northbound and southbound, over the Guadalupe River in San Jose, just north of Tamien Station. The northbound track is on a wooden trestle bridge constructed in 1935 and the southbound track is on a concrete bridge constructed in 1990. Each bridge requires different levels of construction.

The bridges are located in an area of high erosion and are at risk of bank failure during storm events. Riverbank failures have occurred in several previous years, requiring emergency stabilization measures. To address these safety issues and protect the rail bridges, Caltrain proposes to widen the channel and complete the necessary enhancements to the rail bridges.

In addition to Caltrain's passenger service, the railroad bridges are used by Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) freight service; Amtrak passenger service; and by the Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) and Capitol Corridor to reach the Tamien Yard.

Northbound Bridge (MT-1): 
  • The 1935 northbound bridge needs to be replaced with a new concrete structure in order to maintain safe and reliable operations for all users. The bridge does not meet current railroad structural design standards and seismic criteria. The structure has been further damaged by multiple fires, most recently a large fire in November 2017. The replacement bridge structure will be longer (265 feet) compared to the existing bridge (187 feet).

Southbound Bridge (MT-2):
  • Because the southbound bridge was constructed in 1990, full replacement is not necessary and extension of the southern end of the bridge structure is needed to reduce river flow speeds and riverbank erosion.

What to Expect During Construction

While most of the construction work will be completed during the day, night and weekend work will sometimes be required to maintain rail operations. Local neighbors and community members will be notified before the start of any work. Caltrain will continue to operate during the construction periods.

Caltrain will follow all applicable environmental regulations and will work to mitigate any potential environmental impacts to the area before, during, and after construction. As construction for this project is still several years away, more details will be made public as they become available.

Public Information Meeting

Caltrain held a virtual public information meeting for the project on December 10, 2020 at 6:00 PM. The purpose of the meeting was to provide the public with an overview of the project design, the purpose and need for the project, and the potential environmental benefits and impacts of the project as documented in the CEQA Draft Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration (IS/MND). The meeting included  an opportunity for members of the public to comment and interact with the project team. In addition to submitting comments during the meeting, the public has an opportunity to submit written comments to Caltrain during a 30-day review period on the draft CEQA IS/MND.
